BRIDGEND COUNTY BOROUGH COUNCIL – INJUNCTION.

The Association was today served an injunction to prevent members fishing between the Old Bridge and Angel Street Bridge, Bridgend. The Association remains unrepentant regarding this since we have been given the opportunity to highlight the plight of our members to the local community via local radio and press The Association is quite possibly the largest member organisation in the County Borough and has fished this stretch of water for over 117 years. The Council have illegally entered our fishery without our permission and proceeded to work without giving us any prior notice. At this time we would ask members to refrain from fishing this area until we receive further advice from our Solicitors. In the meantime members are encouraged to contact their local councilors to complain at the manner in which we have been treated.

Date: 16th September 2008

Bridgend County Borough Council

Members of the Association today exercised their right to fish the river at the town centre and halted the ongoing works for the river walkway project. This was as a result of the Association again not being informed of such in river works within our fishery. The Association Solicitors have reiterated our right to fish our fishery at all times. The current situation has arisen following the continued aggressive approach by the council and failure to give advance notice of works. The continued aggression by the Council was illustrated today  when after advising Bridge FM that they were working hard to resolve the matter, they were actually threatening members with an injunction to remove them from their own fishery!

Date: 12 September 2008

Important Announcement!!!

As many members are no doubt aware, there is ongoing disagreement with Bridgend Borough Council over the walkway that is being built in Bridgend town centre.

Today, the contractors carrying out the work were driving machines through our river stretches in the town centre, the Environment Agency were called in an attempt to prevent them from disturbing the river bed and the Secretary has been to the Council Offices to speak with their legal department to lodge a complaint.

In the near future, the contractors will be installing a new bridge over the river. To achieve this, they will have to have machines actually in the river to place the bridge. After all the water we have seen so far this season, this will be the first weekend that the river has been a position to respond positively to angling attempts. However, should the contractors machines enter the river, in all likelihood, the river will be turned into a mud ditch from the Town Pool to the estuary and fishing will be fruitless.

The Association therefore request the support of all available members to boycott these attempts until an agreement has been reached with Bridgend Borough Council. All the involvement requires is for all members to fish between the Town Pool (Stone Bridge ) and the slipway at the YMCA over this and next weekend. Be there as dawn is breaking because the contractors start early!

To whet your appetite, already this evening a 5lb and 10lb fish have been caught on this stretch and have been donated to the Brood Stock Program.

Date: 5th September 2008.

With us fast approaching the last few weeks of the season, please be aware of the following: Members must not throw out their 2008 permit as this will be you new permanent permit. From next season we have ended the need for you to send in a photograph as you will be issued with an annual card to accompany your permit. Grayling tickets will be available shortly. Please wait for details in our end of season newsletter which will be dispatched in early October.

Date: 27th August 2008.

Ten fish have now been donated to the Association’s brood stocking program. The fish which are a mixture of sewin and salmon have been delivered to the Llyn y Fan Hatchery were kindly donated by members. For more information on how you can donate fish, please sign into the forum.

Date: 8 th August 2008.

It's that time of year again where some of the fish that are caught in the system aren't as fresh as we would like them to be. Obviously in a few months they will be turning their attention to spawning.

The Association request that any Association member that catches a non-silver seatrout or salmon over 2lb could you please donate it alive for the OAA brood stocking programme 2008. It will be collected for transport to Llyn-Y-Fan hatchery.

Please see the Association Forum for contact details and procedures. Remember, we need as many fish as possible to ensure that fish runs are preserved, and are still healthy in the future.

Date: 29th July 2008.

Due to the continued failure of Bridgend County Borough Council to notify the Association of the progress of the ongoing walkway project at Bridgend, we would ask members to exercise caution when fishing in this area. A scaffolded platform has recently been constructed at the site where site workers are present. Please be aware of the workers when back casting in this area. Due to the irresponsible manner in which the local authority are managing this project by failing to inform us of in such in channel working, please keep an eye on our website for updates.

Date: 20th July 2008.

Spaces are still available on the free bus to the 50th CLA Gamefair at Blenheim Palace on Saturday. Please contact the Secretary for further details.

I am pleased to announce that the River Ogmore has joined the South East Wales Rivers trust. The trust was launched in January of this year and is still in the start up phase. Our river is slightly West of the trust's original catchment area but has much in common with the other rivers within the trust including the Taff, Rhymney, Ebbw, Rhondda and Sirhowey in that it flows from former mining valleys through predominantly urban environments.
This is good news, we were somewhat "left out" being too far East to be included in the Pembrokeshire trust and too small to start our own trust.
Rivers trusts are not just about fish and fishing they cover all aspects of river systems including habitat, wildlife, education and water quality. The trust will work with all interested parties to promote the well being of the river and to secure funds for improvement projects. The website is currently in development but some basic information can be found at:  www.sewrt.org
